American sterling silver presentation snuff box by Albert Coles of New York City, dated 1874 and inscribed Zum Andenken an (To the Memory of) Joseph & Dinah Stern. The box has the pseudo marks of Coles and is also marked A. C. & Co. and 925. The box could be coin silver, with the 925 being a later mark. This especially attractive snuff box has raised beaded border engraved Rosette corner panels and engraving on its sides. Weighing 71 grams or 2.3 ozs. Troy, the box is 3" long, 1 7/8" wide and 7/8" deep. The interior has its original gilding and the hinge is clean and tight, with the lid opening and closing properly. Inscribed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
